Old is the New New: A+ Renovations Mix Past and Present

Our A+ Awards winners have been announced, and the victors stand out as some of the finest projects in the world. But the finalists and special mentions have also created projects that are exciting and noteworthy. One category, the Architecture + Preservation group, featured stellar remakes, remodels, and revitalizations that inspire us to look at history in new ways. The repurposing of buildings has become increasingly important, as the existing building stock is at an exceedingly high level, and less-than-ideal economic conditions make structure re-use an appealing alternative. Plus, rehabilitation can also increase the density, quality, and economic output of a city center or nearby neighborhood. Check out some of these projects that have deftly restored old buildings and managed to preserve their history while reframing it, creating new stories in glass, concrete and stone. Greeley Memorial Laboratory by Christopher Williams Architects, New Haven, CT The original building is an International Style, concrete and glass structure that was completed in 1959.
