Last year, architects like Diller Scofidio + Renfro and SHoP released futuristic proposals for a new Penn Station that would replace the widely-detested Madison Square Garden. But, while these ambitious designs featured amorphous forms and monolithic towers that could easily be the backdrop for a sci-fi flick, they pale in comparison to an out-of-this-world train station concept by Christopher Christophi and Lucas Mazarras. Designed for the eVolo Skyscraper Competition, the Hyper Speed Vertical Train Hub may sound like some utopian transit fantasy. However, the wild design aims to resolve the inevitable challenges that cities will face by 2075, while offering a deliverable and sustainable solution for the future of transport. While traditional train stations can occupy many city blocks, this innovative proposal flips the horizontal form and function vertically, reforming it into a cylindrical mass to increase the tower's train capacity. This tall, cylindrical form eliminates the current impact that today's stations have currently on land use, therefore returning the remaining site mass back to the densely packed metropolis. Additionally, as more countries expand their hi-speed rail systems, the tower will help cities increase ridership capacity by allowing for more trains with ...
