In celebrating the spectacle of sport, it's often easy to overlook the intimate relationship between player, environment, and spectator. The carefully calculated and constructed field of play is integral to each sport, to the point that variations in field conditions can carry additional rules and regulations, such as beach volleyball or indoor soccer. The built environment not only impacts the sport itself, but is critical to the spectator experience. The pursuit of a carefully calibrated structure that maximizes both safety and viewing comfort continues to challenge the architect, as sport structures become increasingly complex.
