The US Pavilion at the Milan Expo Will Be a Hydroponic Hoedown

NYC-based firm Biber Architects have unveiled their design for "American Food 2.0," the US Pavilion at the Milan World Expo 2015. The feast of culinary-themed delights includes a vertical farm, a boardwalk, rooftop gardens, and parking spots for regional food trucks. Riffing off of the Expo theme of “Feeding the Planet, Energy for Life," the pavilion has been christened “American Food 2.0: United to Feed the Planet,” and presents itself as an open, barn-inspired structure with an airplane hangar-sized door. The exhibition spaces housed within are meant to educate visitors. Like most of the pavilions in Milan, the US structure will feature ecological elements including a harvestable vertical farm, rainwater irrigation system, and photovoltaic panels. The vertical farm is a hydroponic facade that runs the length of the pavilion. It will grow crops that will be a spectacle themselves, exposing the often hidden process of farming. The pavilion will also be alive with an acrobatic performance harvest, where aerial performers will act out the harvest.
