The Dodgiest UK Architecture Is Featured in Carbuncle Cup Finalists

Every year, Building Design magazine selects one building as the winner of the The Carbuncle Cup. But, it's not an award you want to put on display at the studio. Explain the editors: "Good architecture should provide decent places for people to live and work, enhance our towns and cities, be enduring and ultimately uplift the spirit of everyone who interacts with those buildings. The sad reality is that far too much new development falls short of these basic tenets of good design ... The result is great swathes of Britain’s towns and cities are mediocre, uninspiring, with no real identity." The publication has announced the 2014 finalists, a shortlist of six UK buildings that are singled out for their architectural crimes against beauty. The anti-prestigious award will go to the building that is the most "unforgivably bad." The distinction is meant to call out these designs and firms and shame them for the lack of quality or sheer ugliness. The name is based on a Prince Charles quote, who called Richard Rogers' proposal for the extension to the National Gallery in London a "monstrous carbuncle on the face of a much-loved and elegant friend."
