Escape From Literally Everything in This Concrete Bunker Retreat

Here in the Netherlands, a former war bunker has been given new life as a vacation home, courtesy of B-ILD of Belgium. The bunker, cave-like and below grade, has very little internal room, prompting the need for low-level, custom made furnishings. To fit both the physical and aesthetic nature of the space, interior finishes are appropriately stark and basic, yet charming nonetheless. Bare concrete, rusted metal door frames, and tight corridors are left as-is, to grant only the most basic needs of visitors in an ode to the past. Located on the Netherlands’ Fort Vuren and out of commission since World War II, the bunker is seen as a national treasure, and renovation was granted by the Dutch Commission for Monuments. The site is rural in nature, providing an escape from the daily hustle, bustle, and overstimulation of the typical urban environment. Le Corbusier’s “Le Cabanon” originally served as a model for the endeavor, in which flexible interior furnishes were implemented to maximize the minimal space.
