There is a focus so often on buildings as images, and possibly even more so, a thirst for buildings as ruins, that we can sometimes forget what exactly goes into their construction. Each intricate part must be choreographed over the course of months or often years, a process which is rarely showcased as art itself. A new short documentary, "Sancaklar Mosque," by SGMStudio depicts the mosque in its construction from beginning to end. The film starts with the foundation, and travels with cinematic shots of the construction, through the changing of the seasons. As the rough, incomplete building takes shape, the shots focus on the modern architecture and its effects and qualities. Soft shots and time lapses show the tension between the frantic, rhythmic construction and the serene, timeless worship space. The mosque represents one of the few examples of modernism in Turkey's Islamic places of worship. Alongside this notion of contemporaneity, the natural landscape is highlighted as a main force in the design and construction of the mosque.
