With temperatures below freezing in New York City this week, we at Architizer are just about ready to pack up and venture out west for greener pastures—or rocky mountains and cacti. There's something to be said for the sprawling structures that aren't packed in by the size constraints of a densely planned city. Architects have free reign to build from the ground up without worrying so much about zoning laws and air rights. In Arizona, architects have risen to the challenge of building on mountainous terrain, as their peers have built some remarkable homes in the Hollywood Hills. As we began sifting through our archives for desert dwellings, we started seeing a trend of modern houses built with clean, straight lines, and open plan layouts.
