Sustainability School: ARO Opens LEED Residence Hall at Tulane University

Greenbaum House, a student residence designed by New York City-based Architectural Research Office (ARO), has opened on the campus of Tulane University. The new student residences are expected to achieve LEED Gold status and are designed to cultivate spaces suited for individuals, small groups, and larger gatherings. Images courtesy ARO via Architect's Newspaper ARO partner Adam Yarinsky told the AN, “The thing that we thought about from very early on, that is very relevant for a student residence, is how do you calibrate scale at every increment — from the room, to the corridor, to the common spaces, to the building itself and the spaces around it, and to the larger campus.” The building's two L-shaped masses complete the school's Zimple Quad by creating an edge and directing people from the project's courtyard into the open green space. The red brick walls reference the surrounding buildings and create texture on the facade. Pre-weathered zinc panels line the courtyard, adding definition to it as an exterior area set apart from the rest of the structure.
