We’ve seen Minecraft architecture, Minecraft Legos, and Minecraft Manhattan, but Minecraft museum art? This one is new. In November, the Tate Museum revealed its newest project: "Tate Worlds." “'Tate Worlds' are exciting Minecraft ‘maps’ that present virtual environments inspired by artworks from Tate’s collection," museum curators explained in a release. "The maps allow players of Minecraft to explore a range of paintings and sculpture, undertaking various activities and challenges that relate to the themes of the artworks, or exploring how they were made.” The organization enlisted top Minecraft artists for the project, and the launch includes two maps that represent classic paintings from the Tate’s renowned collection: The Pool of London by Andre Derain (1906), and Soul of the Soulless City by Christopher Nevinson (1920), a seminal painting that showed an abstracted, Cubist rendering of an imaginary New York City. The work shows the metropolis on the precipice of its ascent to become a modern, global city.
