Ranked number one "most livable city" for the third year in a row by the Economist, Melbourne is clearly a shining star when it comes to stability, infrastructure, education, health care, culture, and environment. Hand in hand with this cultural medal though, the architecture in Melbourne is also pretty darn good. At the cutting edge of international trends, the Australian city is playing a big part in experimenting with tall wooden structures, recently topping off the world's tallest timber apartment complex. However, the city was a testing ground for wooden architecture even prior to the tall trend that boomed with timber engineering innovations. Wood has long been engrained in the vernacular architecture of Australia, with roots reaching back to the humble cottages and bungalows. Paired with Melbournites' obsession with flora (see for yourself with this map), it only makes sense that their contemporary domiciles would also reflect their love of the organic material. Taking a look at some of these gorgeous wooden structures, we would agree that Melbourne is most definitely up to our "livable" standards.
