Inflatables are back! Except, this time round, the pop-60s bubbles are hiding under the guise of other forms—literally. Barcelona-based Penique Productions specialize in transforming familiar interiors by filling the entire space with a custom-crafted plastic balloon. Illuminated with exterior lighting, these ephemeral installations provide dramatic new outlooks on their host-spaces. Like plastic-wrapped furniture on a moving day, the transformed spaces have an almost ghastly pang to them. Although the balloons adapt to these new forms quite precisely, the shift in texture, light, and color add just the right amount of eerie to what may otherwise be overlooked spaces. The group has also expanded beyond just art installations, applying a similar technique to fashion shows, pop-up dining venues, and commercial spaces. Coming up are projects at both the Universitat de Barcelona and nearby art space, Galería N2. El Claustro, 2011. Querétaro, México. El Claustro, 2011. Querétaro, México. El Claustro, 2011.
