For this Bavarian countryside retreat, design firm Holiday Architecture eschewed the typical ostentatious accoutrements of so many hotels and resorts. Instead, the Rottaler Longhouses evoke a subdued tranquility that is neither showy nor dull. Comprising two elongated cabins clad in black timber slats, these pitched-roof structures provide a nice contrast to the grassy hills of Lower Bavaria, their monochromatic façade a refreshing take on classic country retreats. They also maintain a strong connection with the land while avoiding the preciously rustic trap. Large windows and floor-to-ceiling sliding doors provide uninterrupted views of the meadows and nearby lake. Each house comes with a bathtub located either next to a sleek fireplace or under the roof, providing views of the starry night sky.
